Are Online Speech Evaluations Reliable?
December 15, 2009 at 1:19 PM | Posted in Online Speech | Leave a commentTags: online evaluations, online speech therapy, speech evaluations
The short answer is yes. Dr. Anne Hill a PhD graduate from the The University of Queensland completed a study to determine the validity and reliability of online speech evaluations. She
used 86 participants who experienced a variety of communications disorders ranging from dysarthria to apraxia to aphasia. Results of her research found that this method was both valid and reliable. After completing her study she said: “The introduction of telerehabilitation to the profession of speech-language pathology unlocks an exciting new era of research which blends clinical and technological innovation to better understand and serve those living with a communication disorder.”
As more and more research is completed we are getting a good picture of how effective online speech evaluations can be for those in need of services. This is an exciting time for those in need of speech therapy services. With advancing technology these services are becoming more easily accessible while maintaining the quality of speech therapy provided. Online Evauations Deemed Valid Method
November 23, 2009 at 3:33 PM | Posted in Evaluation, Online Speech | Leave a commentThe International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders recently published an article titled “Using telerehabilitation to asses apraxia of speech in adults” written by Anne Jane Hill from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
This article discusses research done to determine if assessing apraxia of speech via telerehabilitation (online speech therapy) was a valid method. The findings of this study show there were no significant differences between the assessments completed using an online speech evaluation and those completed using a face-to-face evaluation. The only downfall to this study was the small number of participants.
The conclusions drawn from this study indicate that completing an online assessment of apraxia of speech is a valid method of assessment. In addition, participants in the study gave the online speech therapy were satisfied with their experience using the system.
This study helps to illustrate the effectiveness of online speech therapy in that high quality services, similar to those seen in face-to-face therapy can be provided using online speech therapy. These studies help to show that our service delivery model is as effective in evaluating and treating speech disorders.
